So I installed Kubuntu on my other computer the other day, and I have been setting up things here and there and decided to add my gtalk info to the Kopete messenger client. Of course, as someone pretty new to linux, I ran into trouble. I searched and searched to figure out what was wrong.
In case anyone has found this entry after having similar problems, here is a brief explanation of the setup:
First, gtalk is jabber. Best to know that off the bat. Enter your gmail account as your user id (with the @gmail.com), and enter your password. Then click “connection” and check all three boxes (SSL, plain-text, and override). Change the server to talk.google.com, and port should be 5223. All should work now according to everything I read online (including Google’s own Instructions).
Mine still didn’t work!!! So I searched some more. I did everything right, and I am not an idiot (usually). So, just when I was about to throw against the wall, I discovered that Kopete has a peculiar bug. For whatever reason, passwords ending in 1 (or “!” I suppose) do not play well with the way the passwords are stored. Gee, my password ended in a 1, so I am not an idiot after all. Kopete just doesn’t like my password. I changed it, so now all is well. I do have to say that having to change my google password just to use Kopete did not amuse me in the least, esp since I use a lot of google products. I guess I’ll just have to get over it… until someone fixes the bug anyway.
If there are any super-smart people out there reading this and know a way around this wonky password thing, please share!
